Dear iDEALS, Dutch Jolijn Snijders is a young photographer whose works interest me for a while now. The following interview is for all you iDEAL readers..
F.M:HOW OLD ARE YOU AND WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE EASTER EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE?
J.S: I'm 27. I don't really care for easter, it's always been my least favorite holiday. I guess I liked it as a kid though, because it was the first time it was warm enough to go play outside again, and you could spend the whole morning searching for the eggs your dad hid in the garden.
FM: WHAT IS FASHION FOR YOU?
J.S: Fashion is a means to an end for me, sometimes I can get lost in the superficiality of it all and then we all have fun with it. I agree that we can express ourselves through what we wear, but to me it's a luxury even talking about Fashion, it doesn't have a deep and profound meaning to me at all really. Usually when I realize this (like right now) I just want to go back to the core of photography and focus on the subject, without really caring about the clothes, they are playing a supporting role in my story. I care more about the person, creating a story around them, or picking something up that's already there.
FM: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN TEN YEARS TIME?
J.S: Hopefully still alive and healthy, and still making the most out of every day. I would like to have Ilovefake magazine issued on print by then, of course it would by then already been out for years.. haha, oh, I can't wait for that to happen. As for the rest I tend not to think too much about the future, I like surprises, I live in the present.
F.M: HOW DOES AMSTERDAM WORK FOR YOU? WHICH OTHER CITY YOU LIKE AND WHY?
J.S: Amsterdam is a pretty cool place to live and work, it's a beautiful city, especially in the summer. Sometimes I get frustrated about working here though, because when I want to do a production everything takes twice as much effort as doing that same production in a city such as Paris. It's harder to get models on a week day, always a struggle to find interesting locations and it's also difficult to get great designer pieces. This is one of the reasons why I love Paris. I travel back and forth between the Dam and the Light City every now and then (more now, than then). Every time that I am back in Amsterdam I remember why I love Paris so much, and I miss it terribly. To answer your previous question, I guess I wouldn't mind living in Paris, but in the end,...I would always come back to Amsterdam.
F.M: WHO R THE PEOPLE YOU ADMIRE AND WHY?
J.S: David Bowie, Cindy Sherman, Cronenberg, Larry Clark, David Lynch, Jack Kerouac, Gaspar Noé, Weegee, Edie & Andy, etc ... also my mom and dad, my friends, the ones who are not afraid to live... because they've all inspired me to get off my ass and do something.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY?
It would be the day I got that phone call ...
